New Year’s Retail Resolutions for C-Stores

New Year, New You. I think that’s the point, right? Each year, we tell ourselves “this is the year I’m going to… be healthier; finish that project; learn a new skill.” We show confidence and truly believe we can conquer our goal! But the truth of the matter is many of us will fall short.

Resolutions

According to Statistic Brain, 45% of Americans “usually make New Year’s Resolutions” while only 8% “are successful in achieving their resolution.” Have you made any “retail resolutions” for operating your convenience store to maximize margins and increase customer satisfaction?

An 8% success rate sounds like the odds are stacked against us, but with some preparation, you can easily follow through.

C-Store Preparations

Americans tend to be busy and looking for convenience; be prepared in the coming weeks and months for resolution customers coming into your c-store to grab healthier options. If you think you might need a boost on your available options, partner with your distributors to start stocking popular items with better nutritional values.

Henry Armour, president and CEO of NACS, and Larry Soler, president and CEO of the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) wrote an opinion piece for NACS Online, sharing that “[at] the start of 2015, convenience stores resolved to blend health and convenience, making the healthy choice the convenient choice for the more than 160 million Americans who visit a convenience store on any given day. Today, more than 1,000 convenience-store locations across the country have committed to offering an expanded selection of fresher, healthier choices, helping jumpstart the industry’s efforts as they begin to focus on increasing access to more nutritional options.”

It’s great that convenience stores are trending towards healthier selections, but not all consumers knows this yet. Make one of your c-store resolutions to better highlight all of the great healthier options you have in store. Let’s work together to increase the percentage of Americans who actually see their resolution completed.

Here are just a few tips to help boost resolution sales:

  • Rework merchandising displays and store layout to highlight healthier options in your food warmers or grocery aisles.
  • Replace sugary grab-and-go items near the register with granola bars or snacking nut options.
  • Create resolution focused advertising at the pump to convince customers who might otherwise simply pay at the pump and go, to come into the store for a healthier meal choice than they might think you offer.
